Idées de petites salles de douche : Maximiser l'espace, le style et la sécurité dans votre salle de bains
Ever feel cramped in your small shower room? You’re not alone. Many of us struggle with tiny bathrooms that feel more like afterthoughts than relaxing spaces. This was exactly the challenge we faced with a dated 1970s small shower room. Our mission? To create a brighter, more spacious, and safer showering experience. Read on to find out how!
The Plight of the Small Shower Room
Small shower rooms often come with a unique set of problems. They can feel claustrophobic, making it hard to move around comfortably. Outdated fixtures and finishes can make the space feel dreary and uninviting. Plus, older bathrooms may have hidden safety hazards like faulty wiring or leaky seals. Poor lighting is another common issue, making it difficult to see properly, especially when you’re trying to get ready in the morning. In this project, we tackled all these issues head-on to deliver a stunning transformation.
Making the Most of Every Inch
So, how do you make a small shower room feel bigger? It all comes down to clever design choices.
Shower Tray Magic
One of the first things we did was bring the shower tray down to ground level. This immediately creates a sleeker, more modern look. But more importantly, it eliminates the step-up, making the shower feel more accessible and open. By extending the shower tray across the full width of the room, we maximised the usable showering area.
Tile Tactics
Tile choice can make a huge difference in a small space. We opted for large, continuous tiles measuring 120 x 60 cm. Why? Because bigger tiles mean fewer grout lines. Fewer grout lines create a smoother, more seamless look, tricking the eye into perceiving more space. Think of it like this: it’s like having fewer interruptions on a wall, which makes it seem larger. The colour and texture of the tile also play a role. Lighter colours tend to reflect more light, making the room feel brighter and airier.
The Power of a Shower Screen
A full shower screen can work wonders in a small shower room. It provides a clear separation between the showering area and the rest of the room, without making the space feel closed off. It also contains the water, preventing splashes and keeping the rest of the bathroom dry. The best part? You can actually turn around comfortably in the shower without bumping into anything!
Safety First: Bringing Everything Up to Scratch
Looks aren’t everything, of course. Safety is paramount, especially in a bathroom.
Asbestos Awareness
When renovating older homes, it’s always wise to be aware of potential asbestos. To avoid disturbing any possible existing asbestos, we decided to tile directly over the old tiles. It is important to note that professional asbestos testing and removal are always recommended when dealing with potential asbestos-containing materials.
Seals and Joints
Proper seals and tile joints are essential for preventing leaks and water damage. We made sure all seals were watertight and that the tile joints were properly filled and sealed to prevent any moisture from seeping behind the tiles.
Electrics Sorted
Outdated electrical systems can be a major safety hazard. We updated all the wiring to meet current safety standards. This not only makes the bathroom safer but also allowed us to improve the lighting, especially around the mirror area and layered lighting from the ceiling in the form of integrated spot lights. Let There Be Light!
Good lighting can transform any room, but it’s especially important in a small shower room.
Mirror, Mirror
By upgrading the electrical system, we were able to add better lighting around the mirror. This makes it much easier to see when you’re shaving, applying makeup, or just checking your reflection.
Natural Boost
Natural light is always a bonus. The updated design maximises the reflection of sunlight, making the entire space feel brighter and more inviting.
Modern Functionality: Beauty Meets Practicality
The goal was to create a shower room that not only looks great but also functions well.
Vanity Flair
The updated mirror and vanity area provide a practical space for everyday tasks. Whether you’re putting on makeup, styling your hair, or just washing your face, a well-designed vanity area can make all the difference. The tiny vanity sink we chose, we made sure its design included a ledge where blow dryer, toothpaste, you name it could be placed. This is critical.
From 70s to Modern Day
The transformation from a dated 1970s style to a modern, functional, and spacious shower room is remarkable. By carefully considering every detail, from the shower tray to the lighting, we created a space that is both beautiful and practical.
Key Lessons for Small Shower Room Renovations
Here’s a quick recap of the key takeaways from this project:
- Prioritise space-saving design choices like a ground-level shower tray and large tiles.
- Always ensure safety and code compliance, paying close attention to seals, electricity, and potential asbestos.
- Maximise both natural and artificial light to create a brighter, more inviting space.
- Choose materials and finishes that create a modern and aesthetically pleasing look.
- Consider the functionality of the space for everyday tasks.
